The international space project “Sea Launch” has been rewarded as a scientific-technical breakthrough achievement of the year 2009 at the International Congress, which took place within October 12-17 in the Republic of Korea.
International Astronautics Congress is held by the International Astronautics Federation (IAF) and International Astronautics Academy (IAA), which hosts the scientists from two hundred institutes, agencies and enterprises of seventy world countries.
The day before the International Astronautics Congress there have been conducted elections of the new members and management of the International Astronautics Academy. Designer General – Director General of SDO Yuzhnoye, Mr. Stanislav Konyukhov, has been elected as a Vice-President for Scientific Activities of the Academy.
IAF annually awards international teams of scientists who achieved the most significant success, breakthrough innovations in designing of the rocketry. In particular, IAA rewarded such projects as “Space Shuttle” and “Mir” orbital station.
IAA recognized the international space project “Sea Launch” as a scientific-technical breakthrough achievement of the year 2009.
This project is a unique achievement of science and technology and an example of efficient international cooperation of aerospace companies "Âîå³ng" (USA), “Yuzhmash” Production Association (Ukraine), SDO “Yuzhnoye” (Ukraine), Rocket-Space Corporation “Energiya” (Russia) and "Êvàårner" Shipbuilding Company (Norway).
First time in the world’s practice a three-stage launch vehicle “Zenit-3SL” has been launched from the floating platform at the equator area in 1999 and delivered a payload of a total weight 4.5t to the transfer orbit to geostationary. Starting from 1999 till October 2009 “Zenit-3SL” LV delivered 28 space crafts to geostationary orbits with a total weight of 6t.
”Zenit-3SL” LV provides a peak payload mass delivered into orbit for its rocket type, the capability of launching at any azimuth, automatic pre-launch preparation, which doesn’t requires the presence of service men at the launching pad, launching of the LV from the platform floating in the ocean.
In Ukraine, the work “Development of a three-stage launch vehicle “Zenit-3SL” within “Sea Launch” project has been nominated for the State Award of Ukraine 2009 in the field of science and technology. (www.kdpu-nt.gov.ua)
